William "Billy" Waite flaked the main for the last time on 2nd January 2020, and with his passing both the RPEYC and Sydney Harbour has lost one of its colourful characters. Bill joined the Edwards in 1971 but had been sailing all his life, refining his skills on a Vaucluse Junior prior to sailing with Pat Gunning and Barney Remond out of RANSA. He later joined forces with former RPEYC Commodore Murray Walker on a Hood 23. Bill and Murray dominated the RPEYC Hood series for many years. More recently Bill sailed on Caress, a 31 foot classic yacht owned by Club member Graham Nock, where he sailed as mainsheet hand in the company of other Club members. Condolences to Bill's wife, Janis, his daughters Belinda, Georgina and Elizabeth and his grandchildren. May fair breezes and sunny skies bless your journey, Bill.
RANSA Regatta The annual RANSA Regatta will be held on Sunday 16th February to challenge for the Admiral's Trophy. Race start is scheduled for 11am, with drinks & entertainment at the RANSA clubhouse afterwards. This is a significant event for the Edwards as we attempt to reclaim the Admiral's Trophy after it has been held by RANSA for the last few years. The trophy is awarded to the best performing yacht club overall, and so all RPEYC boats are encouraged to participate where possible. The RPEYC Sunday Series will re-commence on Sunday 2nd February, with additional races on 1st March and 29th March to complete the 2019/2020 season. As previously, a race briefing will be held at 10:15am on the day, with handicap starts from 11:30am onwards. Following each race, a BBQ lunch will be available on the back lawn for all participants.
'Making Waves' Charity Regatta
Sailors with disABILITIES is holding its annual sponsorship day, the Making Waves Regatta, on the afternoon of Friday 6th March at the CYC. This is a key fundraising event for this important charity and the Club is delighted to support it. For a donation of $2,500 per yacht, the event will provide sponsors with an excellent opportunity to entertain clients, thank staff, or just sail with family & friends. Each yacht accommodates up to 8 guests on a crewed 40 footer. Lunch and light refreshments are provided onboard, with paella and prize giving at the CYC afterwards. The regatta will commence at 12:30pm, and crews will be off the water by 4pm. The RPEYC is providing a RIB and driver as both a safety & film boat for the day. Clubhouse Remediation & Renovation Project
Members are invited to an information session on the the planned remediation and renovation project at 6:30pm on Monday 17 February upstairs at the clubhouse. The session will provide an update for members on progress to date and the expected timeline going forward. All members are encouraged to attend, as this project remains essential to the long-term future of the Club and its facilities.
New Venue Manager We are pleased to announce that Michael Bruce has been appointed our new Venue Manager for the Club. Michael is already well known to many members since commencing as our Assistant Manager early last year alongside Tracy Haddow. Private Member Events this year
In terms of private member events during 2020, members are advised that the Club will not be taking any bookings from late April until early October pending the planned clubhouse renovation over the winter period. Young Members' Summer Cocktail Party
The annual summer cocktail party for younger members will be held on Friday 7th February from 7pm at the clubhouse. The cost is $95/head, which includes a $20 donation to Sailors with disABILITIES. Trippas White Group Executive Chef’s Dinner
Members & their guests are invited to a special 3-course dinner at the Club on Thursday 20th February at 7pm. The menu has been designed by George Diamond, Executive Chef for Trippas White, in conjunction with our Club Chef Cyndel Candaza. The price is $85/head with a cash bar available for drinks. Australia Day weekend Following a number of issues over the busy Australia Day weekend last year, members are reminded of the procedure for reserving tables on the lawn. Members are permitted to reserve in advance one table on the front lawn if ordering lunch from the lawn menu. This applies to a maximum of three separate table bookings by members, and excludes the tables closest to the water. All other tables are allocated on a first-in/first-served basis, and may not be 'held' unless a member is in continuous attendance. A maximum of two tables may be joined together for a larger group. Members who wish to entertain more than 20 people should use the back lawn, which can be reserved in advance. All front and back lawn table reservations should be made with the Club bar on 9327 3941.
Lawn Umbrellas A number of lawn umbrellas were recently replaced following wind damage during December. Members are requested to please reconsider the use of umbrellas on very windy days, and ensure they are well secured on all other occasions. Umbrellas must also be packed away once you have finished with them.
